Project Estimator – Las Vegas

We are in search of an experienced Project Estimator, to prepare bid proposals for private and public projects, and to collaborate with other estimators. The candidate must be a US citizen or authorized to work in the US.

The Project Estimator assumes “Ownership” of assigned projects and is responsible for the review and quantification of the contract documents to create an accurate budget for assigned projects. Responsibilities include analyzing blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other construction documents to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates for bidding construction projects, applying knowledge of specialized methodologies, techniques, principles, and processes. Provides preliminary estimates for planning purposes and detailed itemized estimates based on final plans and specifications. Reviews data to determine material and labor requirements and prepares itemized lists.

Project Estimators are ultimately responsible for the sale of profitable work to meet company sales and revenue goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To be successful in this role the following essential duties must be performed:

  • Project Estimating: Responsible for meeting estimating goals as related to margin and volume, tracking bid traffic per the established procedures to ensure all deadlines are met. Prepare appropriate RFI’s concerning all scope and related issues. Determine project funding, contract type, other competitors and suitability for Giroux in general (scope, location etc.). Visit job site to determine logistics/equipment for installation and/or attend pre-construction meetings as required. Determine project schedule; determine durations for our scope; when applicable. Determine Union requirements, insurance, bonding needs, warranties, safety requirements, etc. Finalize bids using proposal template by Giroux processes and guidelines. Review and sign off on change order estimates as needed by project management team. Responsible for following up with repeat, new, and prospective customers. Presentation of bids to clients as needed.
  • Internal Policy & Procedures (SOP): Follow established estimating procedures according to processes.
  • Negotiation: Negotiate prices and terms with suppliers and customers. Solicit quotations from vendors and subcontractors; include all project particulars in the quote, e.g. extended warranties; review quotes for accuracy.
  • Project Execution: Once LOI or subcontract is received, work with the PM to finalize the merged estimate in preparation of processing with the Accounting Team.
  • Operational Accountability: Responsible for populating the estimating portion of the job folder (take-offs, quotes, etc.) prior to hand-off to project management. Accurately take off and price items for self-performed work. Accurate Job entries using Glaziers Studio as required.
  • Collaboration: Partner with Project Managers as needed to ensure full understanding of project information, logic, approach, etc. and be available should questions arise during execution phase. Partner with field management for accurate estimation of field labor.
  • Customer and Client Relations: Build and maintain relationships with customers, architects, and suppliers to ensure they receive extraordinary treatment and respect at all times.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 3+ years’ experience within commercial construction or similar industry.
  • High School Diploma; or college degree (preferred)
  • Knowledge of construction technology, scheduling, materials equipment and industry standards.
  • Experience in curtain walls, interior, exterior, storefronts and tenant improvement projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to estimate various sized projects.

Skills and Competencies

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, Bluebeam, Procore, Smartsheet’s, and Sage 300.
  • Proficient in negotiating, planning, scheduling, budgeting and risk management.
  • Interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Critical thinking, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze issues, identify solutions and make informed decisions.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This Estimator position has no significant supervisory responsibility.

Travel:  5 – 10% (regionally)

Working Conditions

This position has a hybrid work schedule. Work hours will vary depending on location; the hours typically start between 6:30-7:00 am, the shop starts at 6:00 am, and the office at 8:00 am. When in the office the work environment is characterized as that found in a typical office environment with moderate temperatures and noise levels. Conditions in the field are typical of those found on a construction worksite, working outdoors, exposed to the weather, and working in the snow, mud, with uneven and sometimes slippery surfaces. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and on job sites can be loud. Employees must wear and enforce the wearing of appropriate PPE when onsite.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Other physical requirements include:

  • Interact with others requiring employees to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.
  • Ability to operate equipment typical of construction sites and fabrication facilities; computers, telephones, office equipment, and manipulate paper requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.
  • Remain sitting or standing for long periods of time to perform work on a computer, telephone, or other equipment.
